An artist’s depiction of James Webb Telescope against dazzling starscape is being released as a stamp to celebrate the remarkable telescope. Art director Derry Noyes designed the stamp using existing art by James Vaughan and an image provided by NASA/Space Telescope Science Institute.
This telescope is insanely powerful. It will allow us to see the stars made right after the Big Bang. Also since it is infrared, we can see through objects like nebulas, unlike Hubble. Basically this is a huge improvement over any other telescope, and the amount of scientific progress we can gain from this telescope is massive
In addition, unlike the Hubble, the JWST doesn't orbit the Earth - it sits out past the orbit of the moon, on the night side of the Earth. The Hubble is useless for half a day every day as it sits in sunlight - the JWST will be able to collect data 24-7 for the entire lifespan of the mission.
Some information regarding to this mirror: the glass of the mirrors were made by German special glass producer Schott and the glasses have a special name: zerodur which has a low thermal expansion coefficient. This is so important for such a space application where the temperature changes might be massive. If you have a such combine structure, high thermal expansion coefficient would collapse your structure. The preparation of one single mirror might take 6-12 months.
