The first stamp of Denmark was issued on 1st April, 1851.

It was an imperforated, typographical, watermarked stamp with design based on the Royal crown, sword and sceptre in the centre. The first stamp had a the value FIRE R.B.S printed on it, which is four rigs bank skilling (local currency) and matched the postage meant for national postage rate. KONGELIGT (Royal) and FRIMARKE (Postage Stamp) are printed on the sides.

The local postage rate was 2 rbs, so few stamps with face value of 2 rbs were also printed later.
