Granite paper is the kind in which strands of silk or cloth threads are added to the pulp during paper making process. This gives the paper a mottled appearance, like granite. The thread pieces are usually black and of silk. Other colours and thread types are also known to be used.
The older stamps from western parts of Europe, South Korea, and Brazil are known to use this kind of paper for stamps.
These stamps are easily identifiable by looking at the back of the stamps. The threads embedded in the paper are visible to the eye.
