India’s first indigenously developed electric locomotive was commissioned on 14th October, 1961. The engine was named Lokamanya, belonged to 1.5KV class of DC electric locomotives. This WCM-5 class locomotive was designed and produced at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW). WCM-5 means that it was a broad gauge (W), Direct Current (C), Mixed traffic serving passenger and goods trains (M), 5th generation (5) engine.
A total of 21 WCM-5 locomotives were built at CLW between 1961 and 1963. With the beginning of 25KV AC electrical transmission, these locomotives were being replaced by other compatible locomotives. By the 2000, these locomotives were decommissioned.
India’s definitive stamps at that time were focusing on various development aspects and hence included stamps depicting the locomotives - in 4th definitive and 5th definitive series of stamps.
