Queen Victoria was the first British monarch to complete a long and successful reign of 60 years (Silver Jubilee) on 20th June, 1897. The occasion was celebrated on 22nd June, 1897.
Canada used this occasion to issue the world’s first commemorative stamps to celebrate the event. The stamps depict the face of the Queen from 1837 and 1867, with years inscribed as 1837 and 1897.
The $3 stamp is the most difficult to obtain and therefore expensive in the set. The high face value stamps were primarily used to ship large quantities of newspapers, which costed $10 of shipping charges. This made usage of $3 stamps scarcer.
