1931 Inauguration of New Delhi Stamp Series

After the coronation of King George V, the Emperor travelled to India in 1911, along with Queen consort Mary, and laid the foundation stone for the new capital of India.

The move is said to be due to two factors:

  • Ongoing crisis in the eastern part of India due to partition of Bengal.
  • Delhi historically being the financial and political Center of previous empires.
The capital was inaugurated in 1931 by Lord Irwin, Viceroy.

Six stamps were issued on 9th February, 1931 to commemorate inauguration of New Delhi as the new capital of India.
