Mythical Creatures - Icelandic Legendary Animals

Postur has released stamps featuring ten mythical creatures of land, sea and air from Icelandic folklore.

Mythical Creatures - Icelandic Legendary Animals

  • Skoffin is said to be the offspring of a cat and a fox.
  • Beachwalker, a creature of the sea, posed danger to sheep in the mating season.
  • Shellmonster was a multilegged creature, rusty brown and hairy, which made a rattling sound when it moves.
  • There was the poisonous Reverse-Fin Trout with all fins turning forward instead of backward.
  • Ghoul Cats were offspring of cats who'd bury themselves and stay underground. After three years, they would then reappear as fierce and deadly creatures.
  • Múshvelis (Mouse-whales) sink ships by ramming them or rearing up, placing their feet on the gunwales, and pushing down until the ship capsizes.
  • Seal mothers may be found wherever seals gather, and ferociously attack anything that approaches their “children”.
  • Horse-whales are portents of bad weather, and can create huge waves by whipping their tails.
  • Sea cattle breeds with and steals away farm cattle.
  • Red-Crest or Red-Comb plays dead for months and pounces on to any boat that is within range.
These stamps were designed by Jón Baldur Hlíðberg.
